The dog and cat meat trade in SWITZERLAND (Europe):

The sale of dog and cat meat is prohibited in Switzerland, but the consumption of dog and cat meat is legal.  Dogs and cats are mostly consumed by people in the eastern part of the country.  The president of a Swiss animal rights group estimates that three percent of the population in Switzerland eats dogs and cats, while the head of Swiss Animal Protection believes the number is lower.  In 1993, the Swiss government rejected a petition to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat.  Animal rights groups are still working to ban dog and cat meat consumption in Switzerland.  It is illegal to import any products derived from dogs and cats, including skins, into Switzerland.  (Misicka, 2013, Man-Eat-Dog-World Animal lovers question morality of eating pets)

The Swiss Ordinance of April 23, 2008 on the Protection of Animals prohibits the mistreatment, neglect, and overworking of animals.  (The Federal Council The Swiss Government’s portal, 2020, Animal protection order)

Swiss people eat dog and cat meat, but not on the scale of the dog and cat meat trade in Asia.  Dog and cat meat farmers in Appenzell and St Gallen Switzerland regularly slaughter and eat dogs and cats.  The dog farmers bludgeon many of the dogs to death or shoot them.  Rottweilers are the favorite dog to eat in Switzerland.  Dog meat is used to make sausages, casseroles, and a supposed remedy for arthritis.  Cats are eaten when they are slaughtered for their pelts (fur), but they are also slaughtered solely for their meat, especially at Christmas time.  Some meat farmers serve dishes made with dog and cat meat, especially Mostbrockli, unbeknownst to the people eating the food.   (Brown, 2016, Switzerland: Brutal Dog and Cat Meat and Fur Skin Trade)

Some Swiss eat dogs and cats, as well as sell their fur pelts.  Stores in Switzerland sell dog and cat fur overcoats and blankets.  In 2013, the sale of cat fur was banned in Switzerland because of a huge number of cats being slaughtered for their fur.  The cat butchers put a noose around the cat’s neck and hang them from a beam until the cat stops moving, although the cat is not necessarily dead.  The cat butchers then peel off the cat’s skin, regardless if the cat is still alive.  Swiss officials do not enforce laws that ban cat fur.
